March 2, 2012: We received the pathology report today. The tumor is a Rhabdoid AT/RT, a very rare and very aggressive cancer (see here and here). Because it's so rare, not much is known about this particular cancer. Summarizing the links, it most commonly occurs in children younger than 2 and even after surgery and chemotherapy treatment, the survival rate for children younger than 3 at diagnosis is less than 10 percent. You can imagine how much this information tears us up as parents! We're still working to process it all...it's going to take some time.
We're looking at options currently. We'll continue testing here for now, but are considering other hospitals. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up at St Jude in Memphis or Boston Children's Hospital (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute).
We appreciate your continued prayers and faith. Emmett's one tough kid! He's recovered very well from the spinal surgery and is running around the house raising Cain again! We're looking forward to the ruckus for years to come!
