February 29, 2012: Since my last post we've been anxiously awaiting the results of the pathology on the tumor the surgeons removed. As I mentioned before, the surgeons indicated last Friday that the tumor didn't look like cancer. Subsequently, however, the oncologists (cancer doctors) informed us that they think it is cancer (neuroblastoma), but that they won't know for sure until the final pathology is received. As you can imagine, we've been on eggs shells awaiting the pathology.
The final pathology report was supposed to come in yesterday. When the doctors finally came by at 6:00 pm last night, they told us the results from the pathology lab here have been inconclusive. They did indicate that they believe it is a malignant tumor, but as to what it is specifically they don't know. They're now sending samples to another pathology lab and they expect conclusive results by Friday. In the meantime, they'll allow us to go home for a day and a half. We expect to be home by noon today.
We believe in miracles. It's a miracle the tumor was in a location where it was discovered so quickly on a toddler. It's a miracle the doctor on call was the best pediatric neurosurgeon in the state. It's a miracle the tumor was removed without permanent damage to Emmett's spinal cord. It's a miracle Emmett is walking again so soon after surgery. And we believe the miracles will continue. We're praying the final pathology reports come back negative. And if it's Heavenly Father's will that we endure the trial of cancer, we're praying that the treatments are successful and that Emmett will enjoy a full recovery.
We've been so overwhelmed by the outpouring of love we've received from friends and family. And the ward family has been amazing! Words can't express our appreciation and gratitude for your prayers, faith, meals, gifts, toys, and support. We definitely aren't in this alone! Our hearts go out to each of you - we thank you so much.
We'll keep you posted as we learn more.
